Amazon parrots are intelligent and sociable birds with many striking wild type color variations. For these reasons, they are popular pet birds. However, it takes an experienced bird owner to handle the parrot personality and to provide the care a parrot requires. They are mandatorily social creatures, constantly in need of interaction and attention. So before you choose an Amazon parrot to be your primary pet, be sure you know everything you'll need to know to properly care for one.
Blue Fronted Amazon
Active and comical, Blue Fronted Amazons are natural performers. They love to be around their owners and will “ham it up” for extra attention. Prolific talkers and singers, they vocalize often and can be very loud. Thus, they are not suited to living in close quarters like apartment buildings.
Cuban Amazon Parrot
The Cuban amazon, as its name suggests, comes from Cuba, where it is called “Loro o Cotorra de Cuba.” It is about the same size as a pigeon and is amongst the smallest Amazon parrots. Its plumage is mainly green, with bright pinky-red cheeks and throat, white feathers around and above its eyes, and a purple-pink to dull maroon abdomen. Its primaries or outer flight feathers are blue. The different species have feathers of different colors, particularly on their face, chin and throat. Their bill is pale yellow or is horn-colored and their eyes are olive-green.
Double Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot
Double Yellow-Headed Amazons make wonderful, affectionate pets when hand fed and raised in captivity from a young age. Highly gifted and possessing impressive speech abilities, the Double Yellow-Headed Amazon is a charming bird that loves being the center of attention. Just be sure you have four to six hours per day to devote to care, social play, and out-of-cage time before adopting one.
Green-Cheeked Amazon
Playful and sweet, hand-fed Green-Cheeked Amazon parrots are good family pets that enjoy interacting with their human “flock.” While Green Cheeked Amazons are known as good-natured birds, they have a streak of curiosity that some owners say makes them more prone to mischief-making than some others of the Amazon species.
Red Lored Amazon
Red Lored Amazons are charismatic birds who bond quickly to human family members. Some have a tendency to pick their favorite people and be one-person birds. Red Lored Amazons are talented talkers and singers, but potential owners should be aware that all Amazons can, and do, scream.
Yellow Head Amazon
The Yellow-head Amazon parrots are known for their playful antics and excellent talking abilities. This being said, talking ability will vary between birds and even though many of them are excellent talkers, some may never learn to talk. They are handsome and generally affectionate. Their friendly and playful nature make them excellent pets.
They are easily tamed and trained and are known to be very active – which makes them more suitable to an environment that allows them to fly and move around, such as an aviary or flight. Provided they are given sufficient daily exercise, they can adjust to indoor cages and indoor living as well.
They are known for their loud voices, which is said to be the loudest of all Amazon Parrots. People who are not tolerant to noise, will not do well with this parrot.
Like most larger parrots they can also be very destructive and their need to “customize their environment” needs to be redirected by providing them plenty of chewing toys and branches.
Their longevity should also be a consideration. These parrots can live to the old, ripe age of 60 to 80 years
